Dig into Colombo’s street food scene sampling a unique mix of Sinhala, Muslim, Tamil, and Malay cuisines

The Tour:

Wander past busy markets finishing up at the end of the day to the first food stop, a popular local eatery, to sample some traditional cuisine, including hoppers and other savoury snacks. Move on past the Red Mosque to Colombo’s main street, home to the Bombay Sweet House, known for its falooda and saruwath drinks as well as its sweets. Further down the street stumble across some achcharu (pickle) carts. The Sri Lankan pickle is typically very spicy. See several shops selling varieties of murukku, crunchy, flavoured, fried bits of flour or chick peas. Pass by the Khan clock tower, the harbour, and the old colonial buildings, stopping at the Old Colombo Dutch Hospital, now a renovated complex housing 5-star restaurants, fancy shops, and decent bars. Continue towards Galle Face Green, passing many street food shops, stopping to sample snacks such as prawn and crab. The final stop is Nana’s kothu shop, where it is possible to sample kothu – a Sri Lankan roti.
